Somerset vs Nottinghamshire Match Pitch Report

The pitch at the Emirates Old Trafford looks to be a balanced track. There is an equal degree of assistance for both batters and bowlers. There will be some movement with the new ball for the pacers and if the batters can nullify it, they can score big.

The spinners may come into play in the latter stages of the competition. We have seen teams struggle a bit to chase at this venue and captains winning the toss prefer to bat first. The fans can expect an even contest between the bat and the ball at the Emirates Old Trafford.

What to expect:

Team news:

Somerset: Somerset had a terrific run in the league stage, but now it’s knockout time. They cannot afford any slipups and will have to be at their very best. Fortunately, they have momentum with them. They are coming off a convincing 15-run win against Kent in their last league game at Taunton.

After being asked to bat first, Somerset posted a formidable 221-7 on the board and went on to restrict Kent to 206-7. Opener Will Smeed is top-scored with a brilliant 61 off 28 balls. Smeed is now the leading run-getter of the season for Somerset, with 471 runs from 14 innings at a strike rate of 183.26. His attacking start will make the difference in this match.

The other two batters who have been consistent for the team this season are Tom Kohler-Cadmore (459 runs from 14 innings at a strike rate of 171.26) and Tom Banton (416 runs from 13 innings at a strike rate of 153.50). This gives Somerset one of the strongest top orders in the tournament. What’s more, they have the likes of Sean Dickson and all-rounder Lewis Gregory, who have been among the runs too.

In the bowling department, Matt Henry has proven to be their wrecker-in-chief. The fast bowler has taken 23 wickets this season in just 11 innings at an economy of 8.31. Right-arm medium-fast Ben Green is their leading wicket-taker (26 wickets from 14 innings at an economy of 9.05) and is another bowler to watch out for.

Somerset Key Players

  • Will Smeed – Smeed has enjoyed a consistent run in the tournament so far and he will be looking to ride on the momentum in the quarter-final as well. Smeed scored 61 runs in the last game against Kent. Overall, he has 471 runs this season.
  • Tom Kohler-Cadmore – A stylish batter who has been very good for Somerset in Vitality T20 Blast 2023. Cadmore has played many important knocks for his team this season. He has scored 459 runs in the ongoing edition.
  • Matt Henry – The wicket will not have much for the bowlers but Matt Henry with his extra pace and create problems for the batters. Henry has taken 23 wickets this season.

Probable XI: Tom Banton (wk), Will Smeed, Tom Abell (c), Tom Kohler-Cadmore, Sean Dickson, Lewis Gregory, Ben Green, Craig Overton, Josh Davey, Matt Henry, Ish Sodhi

Lancashire Squad: Tom Banton (wk), Will Smeed, Tom Abell (c), Tom Kohler-Cadmore, Sean Dickson, Lewis Gregory, Ben Green, Craig Overton, Josh Davey, Matt Henry, Ish Sodhi

Nottinghamshire: Nottinghamshire, too, is coming into the knockout stages with a morale-boosting narrow win against Leicestershire. Batting first at Nottingham, Notts Outlaws posted 164-8 and ended up winning the match by just 4 runs, courtesy of a fantastic bowling performance. Tom Moores top-scored with 68 off 48 balls. Moores has been a key batter for the team this season in the middle-order, with 363 runs from 14 innings at a strike rate of 144.04.

Opener Joe Clarke (430 runs from 14 innings at a strike rate of 161.04), however, will be their most important batter in this game. If he gets going, the Notts are sure to have a healthy total on the board.

Captain Alex Hales (328 runs from 14 innings at a strike rate of 142) hasn’t had the best of seasons by his standards, but he’s a game-changer, and we are backing him to make an impact in this quarter-final.

Nottinghamshire will sorely miss the services of fast bowler Shaheen Shah Afridi. The left-arm quick was in sensational form but has had to leave because of national duty. In his absence, Jake Ball will have to play the role of the leader of the bowling attack. The right-arm seamer has taken 14 wickets in 8 matches this season. The inclusion of spin-bowling all-rounder Imad Wasim has certainly bolstered their squad. Imad bowls tight lines and is a more than handy lower-order batter.

Nottinghamshire Key Players

  • Alex Hales – Hales has not been able to make an impact this season but he is a big player who likes to perform in big games. Hales will be keen to shrug off the poor form and come out with flying colors in the quarterfinal.
  • Joe Clarke – The Notts opener has been their most consistent batter this season with 430 runs in 14 games. He has not been able to get big scores in the last three games so he is due for a big game in the quarterfinal.
  • Shaheen Afridi – Shaheen Afridi has been bowling exceptionally well in the T20 Blast. With 22 wickets this season, Afridi has played a significant role in taking Notts to the knockouts.

Probable XI: Joe Clarke, Alex Hales (c), Lyndon James, Matthew Montgomery, Tom Moores (wk), Haseeb Hameed, Imad Wasim, Shaheen Afridi, Calvin Harrison, Matthew Carter, Jake Ball

Nottinghamshire Squad: Joe Clarke, Alex Hales (c), Lyndon James, Matthew Montgomery, Tom Moores (wk), Haseeb Hameed, Imad Wasim, Shaheen Afridi, Calvin Harrison, Matthew Carter, Jake Ball

Somerset vs Nottinghamshire Match Prediction

There have been seven matches played between Somerset and Nottinghamshire; four have been won by Somerset and three by Nottinghamshire. The two sides last met in the Vitality Blast in August 2018.

Somerset has an in-form batting unit and a couple of fast bowlers who are regularly taking wickets. Nottinghamshire would have dearly wanted Shaheen Afridi for this game. But now, they will hope that their batting unit fires. Their batting is their main strength, but minus Afridi, their bowling might let them down in this crucial match.

Tom Banton, Will Smeed, and Tom Kohler-Cadmore are the best options with the bat for Somerset. Smeed and Cadmore have scored more than 450 runs this season while Banton has scored 416 runs. The three batters have been very consistent.

Alex Hales, Joe Clarke, and Tom Moores will be the main batters for Notts. Clarke has scored 430 runs this season while Moores has also played a few good innings for his team, including 68 in the last match against Leicestershire. Alex Hales is always a big player when it comes to T20 cricket.
