ENG vs AUS 5th Test Match Pitch Report

The surface at the Kennington Oval is one of the more batting-friendly wickets in England. The average first-inning score here is around 350. That said, the quicker bowlers will get some assistance, especially if the weather remains overcast. The spinners will come into action in the final two days. Anything over 200 will be difficult to chase here in the 4th inning.

There is a forecast for rain throughout this week and we might see some delays due to that.

What to expect:

Team news: England will be very disappointed with the outcome of the 4th Test match. They had an excellent chance of winning the game but the weather played spoilsport, denying the hosts a famous victory. Nevertheless, they have one final chance at the Oval and will grab it with both their hands.

Zak Crawley was brilliant at Old Trafford, playing a blistering knock of 189 runs to set the tone for a big total. He is now the leading run-scorer of the tournament and will look to continue with the good form. The same however cannot be said about his opening partner, Ben Duckett, who has lacked consistency.

England will rely on its strong middle order to once again take them to a big total. Ben Stokes, Harry Brook, Joe Root, and Johnny Bairstow have stuck to their attacking style of batting and reaped the benefits. Coming to the bowling, James Anderson hasn’t been in the best of forms, picking up just 4 wickets in 3 matches.

However, he is unlikely to be replaced as this might be his last Ashes Test on English soil. Stuart Broad has been brilliant so far, picking up 18 wickets, and will be supported by Chris Woakes and Mark Wood.

ENG Key Players

  • Ben Stokes – What a cricketer Stokes is. The England captain almost pulled off a Headingley repeat in the second Test at Lord’s. Stokes played a marvelous inning of 155 to bring England to the brink of a win. However, his wicket triggered a collapse as England lost the match by 43 runs.
  • Joe Root – Joe Root missed out in the second Test but he continues to be England’s main man with the bat. Root has already scored a century in the series, with him scoring 118 in the first innings of the first Test.
  • Stuart Broad – Broad has been sensational on these dead wickets. He is the leading wicket-taker of the series with 11 wickets in 2 matches, including a 4-fer in the second innings of the Lord’s Test.

Probable XI: Zak Crawley, Ben Duckett, Harry Brook, Joe Root, Jonny Bairstow (wk), Ben Stokes (c), Moeen Ali, Chris Woakes, Ollie Robinson, Stuart Broad, Mark Wood

England Squad: Ben Duckett, Zak Crawley, Ollie Pope, Joe Root, Harry Brook, Ben Stokes(c), Jonny Bairstow(w), Moeen Ali, Stuart Broad, Ollie Robinson, James Anderson, Daniel Lawrence, Josh Tongue, Matthew Potts, Mark Wood, Chris Woakes

Australia: After the draw at Manchester, Australia has successfully managed to retain the Ashes urn for the 4th consecutive time. However, they will take on the field with the intent to win their first Ashes series in England since 2001.

Australia was completely dominated by the opposition in the last match, and if not for the weather, could have very well lost the match. David Warner’s performance hasn’t been up to the mark on this tour and we expect his struggles to continue.

Usman Khawaja, who is the top run-getter for Australia, was dismissed cheaply in both innings at Old Trafford. Steve Smith too has lacked consistency. In such a scenario, there will be added pressure on Mitch Marsh, Marnus Labuschagne, and Travis Head to play a big inning.

As expected, the pace attack has been the biggest strength for the visitors on this tour. Pat Cummins, Mitchell Starc, and Josh Hazlewood are the top wicket-takers for Australia in that order. However, they will need to find a way to combat the `Bazball´ approach and dry up the runs to put England’s batting under pressure.

There are indications that Todd Murphy will be back in the playing eleven and so one out of Cameron Green or Mitchell Marsh might find themselves out of the lineup

AUS Key Players

  • Usman Khawaja – 300 runs in 2 matches, Usman Khawaja has been a thorn in the flesh of English bowlers. Khawaja scored 141 and 65 in the two innings of the first Test and backed it up with 77 in the second innings of the Lord’s Test. He looks unstoppable at the moment.
  • Steve Smith – After a mediocre outing in the first Test, Steve Smith bounced back in style and scored a brilliant 110 in the first innings of the Lord’s Test. Steve Smith will once again hold the key for Australia in the middle order.
  • Pat Cummins – The Australian captain has led from the front with Cummins taking 8 wickets in 2 matches. Cummins also played a crucial role with the bat in Australia’s win in the first Test, with him scoring a match-winning 44.

Probable XI: David Warner, Usman Khawaja, Marnus Labuschagne, Steven Smith, Travis Head, Cameron Green, Alex Carey (wk), Mitchell Starc, Pat Cummins (c), Todd Murphy, Josh Hazlewood

Australia Squad: David Warner, Usman Khawaja, Mitchell Marsh, Steven Smith, Travis Head, Cameron Green, Marnus Labuschagne, Alex Carey(w), Pat Cummins(c), Mitchell Starc, Nathan Lyon, Josh Hazlewood, Scott Boland, Todd Murphy, Josh Inglis, Matt Renshaw, Marcus Harris

ENG vs AUS 5th Test Match Prediction

Rain spoiled England’s party as the fourth test match of the series got washed out. As a result, Australia will retain the Ashes. However, England can potentially stop the Kangaroos from winning the series. Considering all the odds and the current forms of the sides, Ben Stokes’ men have a significant chance to ace over the Aussies and draw the series.

ENG vs AUS Top Batsmen in The 5th Test Match

Joe Root, Ben Stokes, and Ben Duckett are the batters we would like to recommend for the England team. Root and Stokes have form with them, with the players already scoring hundreds in the series. Duckett has also been aggressive at the top and scored 98 in the first innings of the Lord’s Test.

Australia will back Usman Khawaja, their best batter this series with 300 runs, Steve Smith, who is fresh from a magnificent century at Lord’s, and Travis Head, who has been very consistent for Australia in recent times.

ENG vs AUS Top Bowlers in The 5th Test Match

With the ball, Stuart Broad has been brilliant for England, with 11 wickets in 2 matches along with Ollie Robinson who has taken 10 wickets. Josh Tongue also looked good in the Lord’s Test, taking 5 wickets.

Australia has a potent bowling attack, with Mitchell Starc, Pat Cummins, and Josh Hazlewood at their disposal. Starc took 6 wickets in the Lord’s Test and was at his lethal best while Cummins and Hazlewood have taken 8 wickets in the series.
