South Africa vs Australia 1st ODI Match Pitch Report

The surface at the Mangaung Oval is quite balanced. Chasing the target down is preferred on this pitch, and the average score on the pitch is 260 runs from the 62 matches that have been played. Opting to bowl first after winning the toss could be a wise decision.

What to expect:

Team news:

South Africa: Despite losing the T20I series against Australia, South Africa will feel optimistic about their chances in the ODIs. That was a new-look side, but many of their regulars have returned for the 50-over series.

Aiden Markram, after a successful outing in the T20I series, will be looking to continue his form in the ODIs. The stylish opening batter has accumulated 440 runs in his last 9 matches at a superb average of 55 and a strike rate of 110.

Captain Temba Bavuma may have struggled in the T20I series, but he is a fine player in ODI cricket. In 2023, the gutsy opener has smashed 420 runs in 6 ODIs at an outstanding average of 84, with two hundred and one fifty.

Another batter who we believe will make an impact is Heinrich Klaasen. The hard-hitting wicket-keeper batter has clobbered 422 runs in his last 8 innings at an average of 71 and an incredible strike rate of 128.65. Klaasen is particularly dangerous against spin bowlers and will target Australia’s spinners in the middle overs.

South Africa would be pleased to see Kagiso Rabada return to the bowling unit. Rabada has taken 19 wickets against Australia in ODIs at an average of 27.52 and will look to add to that tally.

Lungi Ngidi (11 wickets in the last 7 matches at 6.34), Anrich Nortje (8 wickets in the last 6 matches at 5.47), and Marco Jansen (8 wickets in the last 7 matches at 5.91) further strengthen this bowling attack.

South Africa Key Players

  • Quinton De Kock – Quinton de Kock has announced his retirement from cricket. The left-hander will end his career after the ODI World Cup. De Kock is one of the greats of the game and would like to finish on a high. He will be a key player for South Africa against the likes of Cummins and Hazlewood.
  • Henrich Klaassen – Klaassen has been performing well in the T20I format for a while and South Africa will expect him to take that form in the ODI format too. If he can replicate his T20I form in ODIs, South Africa’s chances of winning will increase significantly.
  • Tabraiz Shamsi – Shamsi had an ordinary T20I series but the spinner will play a huge role for South Africa in the ODI series. He can turn out to be the game-changer for the hosts in the series.

Probable XI: Temba Bavuma (capt), Quinton de Kock, Rassie van der Dussen, Aiden Markram, Heinrich Klaasen, David Miller, Marco Jansen, Gerald Coetzee, Keshav Maharaj, Kagiso Rabada, Lungi Ngidi

South Africa Squad: Temba Bavuma(c), Quinton de Kock(w), Rassie van der Dussen, Aiden Markram, Heinrich Klaasen, David Miller, Marco Jansen, Gerald Coetzee, Keshav Maharaj, Kagiso Rabada, Lungi Ngidi, Dewald Brevis, Bjorn Fortuin, Reeza Hendricks, Sisanda Magala, Anrich Nortje, Tabraiz Shamsi, Wayne Parnell, Tristan Stubbs

Australia: Australia is coming into this series on the back of an impressive run in ODI cricket, beating England 3-0 at home in late 2022 and beating India 2-1 away earlier this year. They are, however, missing a few key players from their squad.

Steve Smith is still rehabilitating from a wrist injury suffered during the Ashes, and Mitchell Starc is out with a groin ailment. Pat Cummins, the regular skipper, will also miss the ODIs owing to a fractured wrist, and Glen Maxwell has been ruled out due to an injured ankle.

That said, you can still not take this Australian team lightly. All-rounder Mitchell Marsh was in sensational form in the T20I series, with scores of 92* and 79* in the first two matches. The stand-in skipper would have gotten used to the conditions pretty well now and is our main batter to watch out for. Marsh has smashed 274 runs in his last 5 ODIs at an average of 68.50 and a strike rate of 123.

Travis Head, fresh from a spectacular 48-ball 91 in the third T20I, is looking better and better with every series he plays. He is likely to open the batting in this series and will give the team some rapid starts.

We are also backing David Warner (350 runs in his last 7 games at an average of 50 and a strike rate of 95.62) to have a great series. Warner’s experience on these wickets will be quite handy for the team.

On the bowling side, Josh Hazlewood (10 wickets in the last 6 matches at 3.54) should do well on this surface with his tight lines and lengths. Also watch out for leg-spinner Adam Zampa, who has 22 wickets in his last 10 matches at 4.68.

Australia Key Players

  • Mitchell Marsh – Marsh was in top form in the T20I series and won the player of the series award for his two stunning half-centuries. Marsh would be keen to make a similar impact in the ODI series.
  • David Warner – Warner has not been in great form but Australia has backed him for the ODI World Cup given his experience and skills. The batter will be desperate to live up to the expectations. As we all know, if Warner has a good series, Australia will be very hard to beat.
  • Cameron Green – Green will play a big role for Australia in the series. He is one of the most destructive batters and also contributes with the ball.

Probable XI: Travis Head, David Warner, Mitchell Marsh (capt), Cameron Green, Josh Inglis, Alex Carey, Marcus Stoinis, Sean Abbott, Ashton Agar, Adam Zampa, Josh Hazlewood

Australia Squad: David Warner, Travis Head, Mitchell Marsh(c), Cameron Green, Josh Inglis, Alex Carey(w), Marcus Stoinis, Sean Abbott, Ashton Agar, Josh Hazlewood, Adam Zampa, Marnus Labuschagne, Spencer Johnson, Tim David, Aaron Hardie, Tanveer Sangha, Nathan Ellis

South Africa vs Australia 1st ODI Match Prediction

Australia will start as favourites. South Africa will welcome players like Miller, Klaassen, Rabada, and Nortje, who have not played a lot of cricket in recent times while other players like Markram, Bavuma, and Dussen did not do well in the T20I series. Australia looks like a far more stable team on paper and thus we are backing them as winners for the game.

We expect South Africa to win this match.

South Africa vs Australia 1st ODI Match Both Teams’ Top Batsmen

Quinton de Kock, Henrich Klaassen, and Rassie van der Dussen will be key for South Africa. De Kock has nearly 6000 runs in ODIs and is one of the greats of the game while Klaassen has been in tremendous form in T20 cricket in recent times and will look to take that form into the ODIs. Dussen struggled in the T20I series but he will feel comfortable in ODIs where he can take some time to get set.

Australia will rest hopes on Mitchell Marsh, David Warner, and Travis Head. Head and Marsh enjoyed a decent run in the T20I series and are used to the conditions. Warner is a match-winner on his day and will look to make a big impact in the series ahead of the World Cup.
