WI vs ENG 5th T20 Match Pitch Report

The pitch at the Brian Lara Stadium tends to be on the slower side. Initially, the ball comes onto the bat smoothly, but as the match advances, the conditions become more challenging for the batters. There might be some assistance for spinners from the surface in the second innings.

What to expect:

Team news:

West Indies: The men from the Caribbean were full of confidence after beating England in the preceding ODI series and taking a two-nil lead in the T20I affair. However, they have since slipped to successive defeats, moving from a position of comfort to a must-win scenario.

Nicholas Pooran and Rovman Powell have been the top run-scorers for the home side this series. Pooran has 139 runs to Powell’s 124. Opener Brandon King enjoyed a promising start to the series but has since gone off the boil with scores of eight and zero.

Alzarri Joseph and Andre Russell are the Windies’ leading wicket-takers this series with six and five, respectively. Joseph joined the Royal Challengers Bangalore in the Indian Premier League recently and will again be eager to prove, in this match, he is worth the big paycheque. Russell is doing well in his first T20I series in two years.

The Windies are going to have to find a way to successfully combat England’s brutal batting if they want to win this match. Opposition openers Jos Buttler and Phil Salt have been dominant of late, with the visiting middle order largely following suit.

West Indies Key Players

  • Nicholas Pooran – the left-hander looked to have won the game for West Indies on Saturday with his innings which included 12 boundaries from number three.
  • Rovman Powell – The captain was once again in typically aggressive batting form in the third T20I. The Jamaican has hit 120 runs in the three games so far.
  • Gudakesh Motie – The left-arm spinner has been West Indies’ most economical bowler in both matches that he has played in the series. England will look to attack him in this game which will present more wicket-taking opportunities.
  • Jason Holder – The former captain and all-format international has picked up a wicket in each of the games of the series so far and got the big wicket of Liam Livingstone on Saturday.

Probable XI: Kyle Mayers, Brandon King, Shai Hope (wk), Nicholas Pooran, Rovman Powell (c), Sherfane Rutherford, Andre Russell, Jason Holder, Gudakesh Motie, Alzarri Joseph, Akeal Hosein

West Indies Squad: Kyle Mayers, Brandon King, Shai Hope (wk), Nicholas Pooran, Rovman Powell (c), Sherfane Rutherford, Andre Russell, Jason Holder, Gudakesh Motie, Alzarri Joseph, Akeal Hosein

England: England have done well to put the disappointment of an early exit at the 2023 Cricket World Cup and ODI series defeat to the West Indies behind them with consecutive wins in this T20I series. But the job is not complete yet, with a high-pressure decider awaiting them in Tarouba.

Salt has been immense recently. He struck 109 not out in St George’s and, a few days later, 119 in Tarouba. A batter hitting back-to-back centuries in T20I cricket is, indeed, rare. Despite his success, he has not picked up an IPL deal. Here’s another chance for him to secure one belatedly.

Salt has scored almost double the number of runs than any other England batter this series. Support from Buttler, Liam Livingstone, and Harry Brook has been forthcoming but will be a particular need if the tourists are to complete a series win this week.

The wrist spin has been instrumental for England in the Caribbean. Adil Rashid and Rehan Ahmed are their top wicket-takers in this series with six and five, respectively. Both have benefitted from dry conditions, which have afforded extra bounce and some additional turn.

England Key Players

  • Phil Salt – The right-handed opener took the Player of the Match Award in the third T20I with four fours and nine sixes in his unbeaten innings.
  • Jos Buttler – The skipper was all smiles after the win on Saturday and he will be looking for his third half-century in his last six international matches in this T20I.
  • Adil Rashid – The leg-spinner continued his impressive run of wicket-taking in international cricket with the dismissals of Shai Hope and Nicholas Pooran on Saturday.
  • Reece Topley – The tall left-hander made his international return since picking up an injury during the 2023 Cricket World Cup. He marked Saturday’s game with a wicket after three balls.

Probable XI: Phil Salt, Jos Buttler (c) (wk), Will Jacks, Harry Brook, Liam Livingstone, Sam Curran, Moeen Ali, Gus Atkinson, Rehan Ahmed, Adil Rashid, Reece Topley

England Squad: Phil Salt, Jos Buttler (c) (wk), Will Jacks, Harry Brook, Liam Livingstone, Sam Curran, Moeen Ali, Gus Atkinson, Rehan Ahmed, Adil Rashid, Reece Topley

WI vs ENG 5th T20 Match Prediction

With the series still alive, there will still be plenty of tension and nerves at the Brian Lara Stadium on Tuesday. Both teams will come into this game with plenty of self-belief in their batting line-ups with the bowlers overall struggling to keep their economy rates down. Saturday’s game was very close and we expect more of the same but we are backing England to win to level the series at 2-2.

We expect England to win this match.

WI vs ENG 5th T20 Match Both Team Top Batsmen

Brandon King, Nicholas Pooran, and Rovman Powell are our batting selections for the West Indies. Opener King has scored over 1000 T20I runs with a top score of 85 not out. Skipper Powell is a clean hitter of the ball and has scored 25 sixes from his last 10 T20I innings.

Phil Salt, Harry Brook, and Jos Buttler are our tips with the bat England. Brook has been one of England’s most impressive batters across the last 12 months and he hit 31 not out from only 7 balls on Saturday. Buttler has hit 79 international scores of 50+ across his career.

WI vs ENG 5th T20 Match Both Team Top Team Bowlers

West Indies, Jason Holder, Akeal Hosein, and Gudakesh Motie are our bowling choices. Hosein went wicketless on Saturday but has 34 T20I wickets with best figures of 4/30. Holder is vastly experienced with 228 wickets across his T20 career.

For England, Adil Rashid, Reece Topley, and Rehan Ahmed are our picks with the ball. Spinner Rehan missed out on selection for the last game but has performed at a top level since making his international debut in December last year. Topley has 69 international wickets from 52 international appearances.
