Sydney Sixers vs Melbourne Renegades Match Pitch Report
Spinners and pacers with good variations have been more effective at SCG. Due to the relatively small square boundaries, it is a high-scoring ground, and with a 65% batting first-win record, bowlers, and particularly spinners, tend to look to take advantage of the scoreboard pressure on the chasing team.
What to expect:
Team news:
Sydney Sixers: Moises Henriques and co. are all set to begin their 2023-24 BBL season at the SCG in front of their home crowd taking on Melbourne Renegades. Though they’ve let go of Naveen-ul-Haq and Chris Jordan, bringing in bowling all-rounder Tom Curran is a great decision.
We reckon Curran will add to the variety and strength of this Sixers bowling attack that still features key players such as Ben Dwarshuis, Sean Abbott, and Jackson Bird.
Josh Philippe and James Vince should open the innings for the Sixers. Last season we saw Kurtis Patterson open with Philippe while Vince came in at number 3. But we don’t think Patterson is the right fit at the top. He is better suited in the middle order at number 4.
James Vince can make a bigger impact at the top in the 1st powerplay. Moises Henriques is another key player in this lineup to watch out for. He is a reliable batsman who will be crucial in building a partnership in the middle overs.
And while there is no Daniel Christian this year, the lower order will still be quite strong with the likes of Jordan Silk, Hayden Kerr, and Tom Curran.
We don’t see Steve Smith making his way into this side just now. He isn’t an ideal fit given the number of batters with a similar style of cricket in this lineup.
Sydney Sixers Key Players
- James Vince – The England international has been hitting runs at a high strike rate in Abu Dhabi over the last week and has scored 1690 BBL runs over previous seasons.
- Moises Henriques – The skipper is the sixth-highest run-scorer in the history of the BBL and he scores his runs at an impressive strike rate of 131.32.
- Sean Abbott – With 29 dismissals from 15 matches, it was another brilliant BBL season for the bowling all-rounder last year who finished as the leading wicket-taker across all sides.
- Steve O’Keefe – The 38-year-old left-arm spinner has participated in 120 T20 games throughout his career and has best figures of 4/10.
Probable XI: James Vince, Josh Philippe(w), Steven Smith, Jack Edwards, Kurtis Patterson, Moises Henriques(c), Hayden Kerr, Tom Curran, Sean Abbott, Ben Dwarshuis, Jackson Bird
Sydney Sixers Squad: James Vince, Josh Philippe(w), Steven Smith, Jack Edwards, Kurtis Patterson, Moises Henriques(c), Hayden Kerr, Tom Curran, Sean Abbott, Ben Dwarshuis, Jackson Bird, Todd Murphy, Izharulhaq Naveed, Joel Davies, Mitchell Perry, Jordan Silk, Daniel Hughes, Steve OKeefe
Melbourne Renegades: Melbourne Renegades boast of a solid overall squad with many big-impact players who could turn the game on its head single-handedly. Yet, for some reason, they lost both their game against Sydney Sixers last season.
They got off to a winning start with 3 consecutive wins and then lost 4 games on the trot including two against the Sixers. Skipper Nic Maddinson had to sit out in the knockout game while Aaron Finch led the side.
MLR lost to the Brisbane Heat in that game. Maddinson has a huge task at hand this season. Firstly, their performances against strong opponents have been quite disappointing.
Renegades, even with a strong lineup featuring some of the most experienced T20 stars have failed with the bat quite often. That’s something they need to work on and secondly, the number of changes in the squad this year presents another challenge of putting together the right XI for the captain.
Some of the notable mentions among the new signings for MLR include Adam Zampa, Nathan Lyon, and Peter Siddle among the bowlers. Siddle, who led the Adelaide Strikers was also a key wicket-taker for the side.
His addition to this bowling attack surely adds a lot of strength and Zampa with his leg-break is well-known for his ability to strike at the right time. Quinton de Kock is another huge addition to this lineup who could well solve their batting problems.
Melbourne Renegades Key Players
- Aaron Finch – The former Renegades skipper hit 428 runs in last season’s campaign with only three players scoring more runs across the entire tournament.
- Joe Clarke – The keeper-batter has made the trip across the city from Melbourne Stars for this season and his aggressive top-order style combined with his wicket-keeping makes him a fine addition for the Renegades.
- Adam Zampa – The leg-spinner was very impressive during the 2023 Cricket World Cup during which he tallied 23 dismissals and this will be his debut for Melbourne Stars.
- Tom Rogers – Only three bowlers picked up more wickets than the bowling all-rounder across last year’s competition when he took 23 wickets from only 15 games.
Probable XI: Aaron Finch, Joe Clarke(w), Jonathan Wells, Nic Maddinson(c), Mackenzie Harvey, Jordan Cox, Will Sutherland, Tom Rogers, Mujeeb Ur Rahman, Kane Richardson, Adam Zampa
Melbourne Renegades Squad: Aaron Finch, Joe Clarke(w), Jonathan Wells, Nic Maddinson(c), Mackenzie Harvey, Jordan Cox, Will Sutherland, Tom Rogers, Mujeeb Ur Rahman, Kane Richardson, Adam Zampa, Fergus O Neill, Harry Dixon, Jake Fraser-McGurk

Sydney Sixers vs Melbourne Renegades Match Both Team Top Batsmen
For Sydney Sixers, our tips are Steven Smith, James Vince, and Moises Henriques with the bat. Right-handed Smith will open the batting for the Sixers in this game and will be keen to make an impact before he joins up with the Test squad ahead of the series with Pakistan. Henriques has hit 15 half-centuries in the BBL.
Joe Clarke, Aaron Finch, and Shaun Marsh are our batting choices for the Melbourne Renegades. Marsh is vastly experienced at 40 years of age and with 6869 runs to his name in this format. Keeper-batter Clarke has hit 27 half-centuries and four hundred in his T20 career.
