Sydney Sixers vs Melbourne Stars Match Pitch Report
Sydney Cricket Ground is often considered a good batting ground and high scores are made on this ground it is good for the batsmen under lights at night but spin bowlers also get some help from the pitch. The team batting first gets the advantage in the night.
What to expect:
Team news:
Sydney Sixers: Sydney Sixers are on a roll with 3 back to back wins. They should be pretty confident in securing the 4th too. The visitors aren’t in the best shape with some of their key players in both departments struggling to deliver.
Sixers have got their bowlers in great form. They aren’t dependent on any particular player. If Ben Dwarshuis fails, there is Jackson Bird to come in and deliver a breakthrough.
And if neither works on the given day, Tom Curran and Jack Edwards would do the job. There are many bowling options for Moises Henriques in both the pace and spin departments. However, he will be hoping for a better outing with the bat.
Jordan Silk’s unbeaten 66 in the last game helped Sydney Sixers reach 155 while the rest of the batters failed to get going. Josh Philippe and James Vince in particular are struggling to get off to a good start in the top order.
That will be a big concern for the Sixers as it affects their powerplay performance. Daniel Hughes at number 3 followed by skipper Henriques and Silk will be crucial in the middle-order.
Whether the Sixers finish on a high will depend on the performance of these three batters. While they also have Jack Edwards in the lower order capable of a few good strokes at the back end, Vince must find his form if the Sixers are to continue their winning run.
Sydney Sixers Key Players
- Josh Philippe- the right-handed keeper-batter struck four fours at the top of the order on Friday and he has made good starts in all three of his innings so far in this year’s BBL.
- Jordan Silk- the 31-year-old middle-order batter took the Player of the Match Award in the win over Adelaide Strikers with 66 not out which were all crucial runs with the Strikers winning by only 1 run.
- Jackson Bird- the vastly experienced right-arm pace bowler is yet to go wicketless in this season’s campaign. He dismissed D’Arcy Short and James Bazley in the last match.
Probable XI: Josh Philippe (wk), James Vince, Daniel Hughes, Moises Henriques (c), Jordan Silk, Jack Edwards, Joel Davies, Ben Dwarshuis, Jackson Bird, Todd Murphy, Steve OKeefe
Sydney Sixers Squad: Josh Philippe (wk), James Vince, Daniel Hughes, Moises Henriques (c), Jordan Silk, Jack Edwards, Joel Davies, Ben Dwarshuis, Jackson Bird, Todd Murphy, Steve OKeefe, Sean Abbott, Mitchell Perry, Hayden Kerr, Izharulhaq Naveed, Ryan Hadley, Kurtis Patterson
Melbourne Stars: Melbourne Stars are in search of their first win of the season. And they need a much better performance with both bat and ball. Though the batters managed a comeback in the last game taking the Stars to 172 runs, the bowlers failed to restrict Sydney Thunder.
While Sam Harper and Thomas Rogers continued to fail at the top, Beau Webster and Glenn Maxwell got going in the middle order building a 69-run partnership for the 3rd wicket.
Hilton Cartwright got off to a great start with 22 off 11 balls but failed to finish the innings for the side. There are some good signs in this lineup but there is still a lot of room for improvement.
The batting lineup is deep with Jonathan Merlo and Liam Dawson coming at number 7 and 8. Nevertheless, it will not be a tough challenge for MLS as they face the Sixers at the SCG.
The opposition is on a winning streak and their bowlers are all in good touch. Maxwell and Stoinis will be the key players and if the two are out cheaply, Stars will be less likely to finish with a competitive total.
The bowling attack features some very promising players like Haris Rauf, Mark Steketee, and Liam Dawson. However, they haven’t been consistent of late and others like Usama Mir and Beau Webster will be expected to step up and deliver.
Melbourne Stars Key Players
- Glenn Maxwell- the batting all-rounder has been unfortunate with injuries over the last 12 months but when has been fit has produced some of the most memorable white ball innings.
- Beau Webster- the medium pacer, who is also capable of bowling off-spin, dismissed Alex Hales, Cameron Bancroft, Oliver Davies, and Jason Sangha in the last game.
- Liam Dawson- the right-arm medium fast bowler took a wicket with his first ball of the game against Brisbane Heat. He will certainly enjoy the conditions in Hobart.
Probable XI: Sam Harper (wk), Thomas Rogers, Beau Webster, Glenn Maxwell (c), Marcus Stoinis, Hilton Cartwright, Jonathan Merlo, Liam Dawson, Usama Mir, Mark Steketee, Haris Rauf
Melbourne Stars Squad: Sam Harper (wk), Thomas Rogers, Beau Webster, Glenn Maxwell (c), Marcus Stoinis, Hilton Cartwright, Jonathan Merlo, Liam Dawson, Usama Mir, Mark Steketee, Haris Rauf, Nick Larkin, Joel Paris, Joe Burns, Brody Couch, Campbell Kellaway, Corey Rocchiccioli

Sydney Sixers vs Melbourne Stars Match Both Team Top Batsmen
Josh Philippe, James Vince, and Jordan Silk are our selections for the Sydney Sixers. England international right-handed opener Vince is yet to get going with big scores in this year’s BBL but he has hit over 1700 runs over his BBL career. Silk averages over 32 in T20 cricket with a top score of 78 and he will be targeting his eighth half-century in this format.
For Melbourne Stars, Glenn Maxwell, Hilton Cartwright, and Sam Harper are our batting choices. Cartwright captained the side in Maxwell’s absence and has looked in good form with scores of between 22 and 33 in all three games so far. He now needs to kick on and make big innings for the Stars. Maxwell struck five fours on Saturday and has hit 9268 T20 runs across his career so far.
Sydney Sixers vs Melbourne Stars Match Both Team Top Team Bowlers
Sydney Sixers, Sean Abbott, Jackson Bird, and Todd Murphy are our picks with the ball. Off-spinner Murphy conceded only 14 runs from three overs on Friday at this venue and also got the wicket of Jake Weatherald. Abbott missed Friday’s game but the top wicket-taker from last year’s BBL and the all-time top wicket-taker in the tournament will be looking forward to returning to the team and playing in humid conditions on Boxing Day.
Beau Webster, Usama Mir, and Liam Dawson are our bowling tips for Melbourne Stars. Webster produced his best T20 bowling figures in the defeat against Sydney Thunder and at one stage was on a hat-trick. Leg-spinner and Pakistan international Mir is one dismissal away from his 100th in T20 cricket and he should enjoy the surface in Sydney.
