San Francisco Unicorns vs Seattle Orcas Match Pitch Report

Not much is known about the playing conditions at Grand Prairie Stadium in Dallas, Texas. The stadium was used as a ballpark but has been redeveloped as a cricket ground (reconstruction started in April 2022). Given that it is being used for the opening match of the inaugural edition of the Major League Cricket 2023, one can expect fireworks from the bats and diminishing returns with the ball, as is the case on most T20 pitches.

Reports suggest this will be a good batting wicket in Texas to begin the tournament. A par score is likely to be somewhere around 190.

What to expect:

Team news:

San Francisco Unicorns Riders: San Francisco Unicorns showed off their batting depth in their very first game. After being asked to bat first, they were 50-4 at one stage in the 7th over, but ended with a formidable total of 215-5, thanks to an outstanding unbeaten 91 off 51 balls by Corey Anderson. The Kiwi batter shared a scintillating 129-run partnership with all-rounder Shadab Khan (61 off 30 balls) to set up the massive total, which helped them cruise to a 22-run win.

The Unicorns have a star-studded batting lineup, with the likes of Finn Allen, Matthew Wade, Marcus Stoinis, and captain Aaron Finch making up their top order.  The lower order came to their rescue in the first game, but we are backing Allen and Stoinis to make some hefty contributions in this game. Stoinis, in particular, is the batter to watch out for. He was in great form in the IPL this season, scoring 408 runs in 15 matches at a strike rate of 150.

Among the bowlers, the Unicorns will depend on Haris Rauf and Liam Plunkett to deliver the early strikes. Plunkett had figures of 2-30 from his 4 overs in the previous game and enjoyed bowling on this wicket. Shadab Khan’s leg-breaks too will come in handy during the middle overs.

San Francisco Unicorns Key Players

  • Aaron Finch
  • Corey Anderson
  • Marcus Stoinis
  • Shadab Khan

Probable XI: Finn Allen, Matthew Wade(w), Aaron Finch(c), Marcus Stoinis, Corey Anderson, Shadab Khan, Tajinder Dhillon, Chaitanya Bishnoi, Liam Plunkett, Carmi le Roux, Haris Rauf

San Francisco Unicorns Squad: Finn Allen, Matthew Wade(w), Aaron Finch(c), Marcus Stoinis, Corey Anderson, Shadab Khan, Tajinder Dhillon, Chaitanya Bishnoi, Liam Plunkett, Carmi le Roux, Haris Rauf, Lungi Ngidi, David White, Qais Ahmad, Mackenzie Harvey, Brody Couch, Sanjay Krishnamurthi, Smit Patel, Amila Aponso

Seattle Orcas: Seattle Orcas’ win over Washington Freedom at Grand Prairie Stadium wasn’t the most convincing one, but they will still be overall happy with the end result. On a wicket that became a little two-paced, they struggled a bit in their chase of 145, but eventually crossed the mark with two balls to spare. Opener Nauman Anwar top-scored with a fluent 48 off 37 balls, while Imad Wasim provided the finishing touches with his unbeaten 43 off 28 balls.

The Orcas’ batting largely depends on Quinton de Kock at the top and Heinrich Klaasen in the middle, with Shimron Hetmyer as their designated finisher. Both De Kock and Klaasen failed to make any contribution in the first game, but we expect either one of them to go make an impact in this match. Hetmyer did his job well in the last match, scoring 23 off 19 balls in the dying moments of the chase. He is likely to continue his good work.

The Orcas produced a solid bowling performance in the first match against MI, restricting them to 144-7 in their 20 overs. Left-arm spinner Imad Wasim was miserly as ever in the Powerplay, and he will pose the biggest challenge to Francisco’s top-order. Andrew Tye (1-26 off 4 overs) bowled tight lines and lengths, and the team will continue to use him in the middle overs.

One major issue for the Seattle Orcas is their bowling department, which lacks experienced seamers beyond Parnell. This can prove to be a big hurdle for them in the tournament.

Seattle Orcas Key Players

San Francisco Unicorns vs Seattle Orcas Match Prediction

Expect a closely contested match between these two well-matched teams. San Francisco Unicorns have an advantage over their opponents with their batting depth and their exceptional death bowling skills, which could ultimately make the difference between the two teams. Keep an eye on Haris Rauf, as he has the potential to tilt the match in San Francisco’s favor with his Yorkers at the death. The Seattle Orcas appear to be a little short on batting depth, which could cost them the game.
